Importing Demo Content

All of our themes come with the ability to download the Demo Content. What that means is each post, page and even the products you see in the demo will be downloaded to your site. If you have never used WordPress this is a great way to browse around the Dashboard side of your site and get familiar with what is where and how things are set up. However saying that, it isn’t always the best option. Downloading all that content means you will eventually need to delete or replace it with your own. It is an extra step that isn’t always necessary.

First Step: Prepare your new site

Before downloading the demo content you want to prepare your new site.

  • Download your themes-demo-content.zip file from your account page
  • Visit your themes tutorial and make sure that you have downloaded and installed all the plugins you plan on using.
  • Then extract the themes-demo-content.zip file to your desktop
  • Right click the .zip file
  • Select Extract All
  • Choose where to extract it
  • A file will appear on your desktop with the .xml file inside of it.

Step 2: Upload the Demo .XML file

If your plugins are installed and active and you have extracted your demo.zip file for the .xml sheet you are ready to import the demo content. In your dashboard head to Tools > Import This screen will come up…

WordPress-import-settings

Since the data you are importing is directly from WordPress you’ll choose “WordPress.” Because you have never used the import feature before, follow the instructions on-screen and you will be taken directly to the import plugin for installation. Activate it, and navigate back to the WordPress Import Settings to bring in the XML data. Tools > Import > WordPress At this screen select “Browse” and then find your .xml sheet that you extracted from the theme-demo-content.zip and then select “Upload File & Import”

Before uploading all the content, WordPress will want to know who to assign the demo content to. Select the user you would like to assign the content to. Also decide if you would like the images downloaded as well. Then click Import.

Be patient and don’t refresh your screen. This process can take a while. On the final import screen you’ll see a running list of imported data, as well as a message that all the data is imported correctly, and WordPress will tell you to “Have fun!”.

Troubleshooting

Images Failed to load

Many hosting providers will time out after so long when trying upload an image. Majority of the time that is why your images did not load. Do not re-run the file in hopes to get the images to load because it will duplicate all the content that was just imported.

Content Failed to load

Majority of the time it is because you are missing a plugin that the failed to import content needed in order to import. An example would be if you didn’t install Woocommerce, then the demo products will not be imported.

I don’t think anything happened

Before running the import again, click on your pages or posts to see if content has been downloaded. If those are still empty areas then run the importer again. If this still does not work, it is a hosting setting and you will need to call your hosting support to see if there is anything they can do to allow that content be downloaded.
